Nantes and the "Commerce triangular"
During the 18th century, several European ports were involved in trading trinkets, slaves and molasses (or rum). In France the most active port in this trade was Nantes. The main French trading colony in the New World was Saint Domingue. The slave revolt and resulting civil war started in 1791, eventually leading the an independent Haiti in 1804.
