Mr. Ruston has now gone to N.Y. to buy goods and they will probably be here in about three weeks. We have not a great many goods on hand at present and cannot expect business to be so good as it would be if we had a new appointment of goods. I hope father's family are doing well on the farm. ix. Harvey Hardison
19 x. Ida M. Hardison
xi. Wallace Libby Hardison was born in 1850 in Caribout, ME, died on 10 Apr 1909 in Roscoe, Ca after being hit by a train..
Two of Hardison's older brothers had migrated to Pennsylvania and had learned the driller's trade and learned it well. They became contract drillers for the Stewarts, as well as wildcatters in their own right, and Harvey Hardison held Lyman Stewart's highest accolade, "he always left a clean hole."
=========================
Wallace Hardison was a massive man with bristling, black mustaches, an elastic, impatient stride, and a restlessly brilliant mind. Desk work and details were not for him, and he loved the hurly-burly of the oil fields almost as much as he loved good horseflesh. Quick to act, and quicker still to make decisions requiring action, he was genial, friendly, outgoing, impulsive, and generous to a fault. Espousing the Universalist faith, he lacked Stewart's compulsive piety, and he was a Republican activist, while Stewart by comparison was apolitical. Both men were most competent in the fields they knew, crude production and speculation, and both knew the parlous position of a producer at the mercy of the Rockefeller Trust's price-setting powers over crude. Neither seems to have been as vitriolic as Milton Stewart, who linked the words "Standard" and "rascal" almost automatically.
Stewart was deeply impressed by the Ex-Mission, the Sespe District, and Pico Canyon when Blake showed them to him in mid-April, 1883. He was heartened, too, by Blake's unwarranted assurance that Blake alone controlled the Ex-Mission. His telegraphed enthusiasm brought Hardison and John Irwin, a Stewart cousin and a competent driller with a nose for oil, to Santa Paula in mid-May. They were similarly impressed, and the result was the formation of Hardison, Stewart and Company (H. S. & C.) which was unincorporated but capitalized at $25,000. The Stewart family took 51 percent of its stock, Hardison and Collins, 49 percent, and Hardison became its president and general manager with Stewart serving as treasurer.
Wallace Hardison's financial straits were even more onerous than his partner's for several reasons, among them the fact that C. P. Collins was never as dependable a source of needed capital as was Milton Stewart. The main reason lay in his purchase of the surface rights to 6,300 acres of the Ex-Mission for $16,500 on November 10, 1883. This identified the Hardison family with Ventura County in a way never done by Lyman Stewart, and made the nucleus of the locally famed Santa Paula Horse and Cattle Company.
39. Dorcas Abbott, daughter of Jacob Abbott and Dorcas Libbey , was born on 4 May 1804 in Lebanon, York, ME, died on 4 Mar 1887 in Caribou, Aroostook, ME, at age 82, and was buried in Caribou, Aroostook, ME.

In 1763 a Scots-Irish travelled from Dublin, Ireland to Philadelphia to begin a new life in a new world. Patrick Graham created a legacy in America that continued the traditions of his ancestral lands and combined them with others in an experimental nation. As part of the experiment, he fought in the war that liberated the new nation from its tyrannical English overlords. It is believed that Patrick saved General Lafayette from capture at the battle of Brandywine near Philadelphia. After the war Patrick settled in Butler County and began farming.
In 1796 Patrick came to Jefferson Township, Butler County, Pa., and erected a cabin on a tract of three hundred acres and returned for his family and household goods and moved by the methods of those days, horses and pack saddles, to his new home in the wilderness.
His two children, Rosanna and Joseph, were tied in the bundles and placed on the pack saddles with their little heads popping out to view the scenery as they passed by.
His wife, with the baby Daniel in her arms were on the saddle. They had no friends or neighbors to greet them at their new home as Patrick, his wife, and children were the first settlers in Jefferson Township.

110. Pierre Le Breton, was born in 1745 in Nantes, France and died in 1813 in Newburyport, Mass.
Peter [Pierre] Le Breton was a native of the city of Nantes, France. As a young man he visited Newburyport on the business of an uncle who was a sugar-planter of the West Indies*. He became interested in Elizabeth Pearson and returned the following year, 1776, to marry her and make his home in Newburyport. He was called Captain, and owned some vessels in trade with the West Indies and France. A Frenchman and a Roman Catholic, he seems to have conformed to the customs and religious life of his neighbors, and to have been a respected citizen, noted for his liberality to the poor. An altar, found after his death in a small room to which he kept the key, showed that he had not forsaken the church of his childhood.
*The most important French New World colony at the time was Saint Domingue (modern day Haiti). The English were at war with the French and sought to block trade between the American colonials and the French sugar planters. The main trade was in molasses used to make rum.

He inherited a large estate from father, and land from wife's father at Fall River, Mass. Member of both House and Senate for Massachusetts. He did not fight in Revolution.
He became one of the magnates of his day, living in a manner commensurate with his wealth. The farm on which he lived and died he inherited from his father, it including all that part of the Fall River of the present day lying north of the line of Elm street and south of Turner street, extending from the shore to Watuppa Lake. He owned other large tracts, and on the death of his father-in-law, Joseph Borden, of Freetown, he came into possession of valuable water power. He enclosed a large park, in which he maintained a herd of deer, and at his home he entertained with generous and warm-hearted hospitality.
Among his guests was General Lafayette, who upon his return to France acknowledged his entertainment by the Durfees by the gift of a pair of blooded French hounds. A high-minded, upright and intelligent man, he was called to high place in the public service, and during the Revolution he used a large portion of his estate to further the cause of independence.
He represented Freetown (now Fall River) for many years in the Great Court and in the General Court; sat in the State Senate thirteen sessions by election; was a member of the governor's council six years, and judge of the Court of Sessions for Bristol county several years. He died at his home July 9, 1796. Thomas DURFEE married, August 9, 1747, Patience Borden, of Freetown, daughter of Joseph Borden, and they were the parents of a large family, including a son, Charles, of further mention. [Lizzie Borden the suspected murder of her parents, was Patience's 1st cousin four times removed.]
On January 9, 1788, a convention was held in Boston, Suffolk County, MA, to vote on the ratification of the new United States Constitution and the Honorable Thomas DURFEE Esquire, delegate of Freetown, voted to ratify.
He was long a member of the General Court of Mass, and in both the House and the Senate, and was for six years a member of the Governor's council, and as such was one of the honorable pall bearers at the funeral of Governor John Hancock, in 1793."
